Text description provided by the architects. The rural area, surrounded by old farms and castles, convinced us to conceive a building according the typology of the old fram barn of this area. So we worked with a roof pitch of 45° and bays of five meters.
In consultation with the landscape architect, we orientated the building, with respect for the old farm configurations, cross scheduled at the farmhouse.
In order not to create caricature imitation architecture, the building is conceived as a modern industrial building. The barn is constructed from a steel frame, the facade is finished with solid precast concrete panels and the roof is made of self-supporting steel roofing sheet. These materials had as an additional benefit to be very inexpensive.
The entrances to the building are happening through wooden sliding gates slipping behind the facade. By using wooden gates, the barn gets a warm touch.
For Natural lighting has been chosen to work with centralized light planes. The large central skylight gives an overload of light to the central space, while the polycarbonate north façade creates a constant pleasant lighting for the outdoor kitchen with a direct view of the surroundings.
